Wang Dongling’s landmark solo exhibition Between Heaven and Heart: Wang Dongling’s Calligraphy will be on view at the Imperial Ancestral Temple in Beijing from November 6 through November 14, 2016. The exhibition will feature an installation of monumental calligraphy in Wang’s groundbreaking Chaos Script on transparent acrylic plates and incorporate the historic Ancestral Temple’s space and architecture. The artist will give a live calligraphy performance during the opening, which will begin at 2pm on November 6.
The third Poetry Calligraphy Painting Annual Exhibition, Between Heaven and Heart is co-curated by Fan Di’an, Director of the National Museum of Art of China (NAMOC) and Xu Jiang, President of the China Academy of Art. It is jointly organized by the Central Academy of Fine Art, China Academy of Art, Chinese Calligraphers Association, the Hangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles. INK studio Director Dr. Britta Erickson is one of the exhibition’s academic advisors.
Wang Dongling (b. 1945 in Jiangsu) is China’s most renowned calligrapher and has the unique status of being both a consummate traditional calligrapher and an avant-garde experimentalist. In a career spanning six decades, he has consistently redefined Chinese calligraphy through experimentations with scale, performance, and materiality. In Chaos Script, his latest and most radical innovation, he breaks away completely from the implied grid of traditional calligraphy, interweaving individual characters and entire columns into an amorphous field, thereby restoring calligraphy to a state of primal nature. Whether literate in Chinese or knowledgeable in calligraphy, the viewer is compelled to experience it afresh.
Wang Dongling’s solo exhibition Writing Chaos, which is devoted to Chaos Script, is on view at INK studio, Beijing through November 20, 2016. For more information, please visit: http://www.inkstudio.com.cn/exhibitions/22/overview/
