During the current Venice Biennale, Zheng Chongbin is exhibiting his environmental video installation Chimeric Landscape in the international group exhibition "Personal Structures - Crossing Borders" at Palazzo Bembo, the European Cultural Centre in Venice. Curated by Maya Kóvskaya, the installation projects a stream of images of entropy--blood cells, riverways, billowing smoke, ink diffusing through fibrous xuan paper--on a translucent scrim set between jet-black surfaces and accompanied with a carefully devised soundscape. Immersed in the endless transformations, interpenetrations, reflections, and diffractions of images, the viewer perceives the vitality and agency of matter.
On May 8, Leeza Ahmady and Ambika Trasi of New York-based Asia Contemporary Art Week (ACAW) organized a Field Meeting at the Navy Officer's Club in Venice. There Zheng Chongbin presented Chimeric Landscape and discussed his creative process with 10 other fellow artists.
A site-specific adaptation of Chimeric Landscape will be on view at Ink Studio's upcoming Zheng Chongbin solo exhibition "Wall of Skies," which will open on May 30 and feature his light-and-space installations and latest paintings.
