Journey of Ink: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Painting from Musée Cernuschi

6 Sep 2024 - 5 Jan 2025

Bund One Art Museum, Shanghai

The Musée Cernuschi, Museum of the Asian Arts of Paris, Paris Musées and the Bund One Art Museum have co-organized the Journey of Ink: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings from the Musée Cernuschi. The exhibition marks the first time that Chinese artworks collected in an overseas museum have returned to the Chinese mainland for a large-scale display.

With the exhibition's some one hundred modern and contemporary Chinese paintings, the Musée Cernuschi offers a panorama of Chinese artists working in their native country or on the French artistic scene of the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition features work by Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi, Pu Ru, Yu Fei'an, Xie Zhiliu, and Wang Tiande, as well as Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian, Pan Yuliang, Pang Xunqin, Wu Zuoren, Sanyu, Zao Wou-ki, Chu Teh-chun, and Yang Jiechang.

Reflecting the cultural and artistic exchanges in both France and China, the work of these artists is testament to the creativity of 20th- and 21st-century Chinese painting. Alongside archival footage, the exhibition explores the evolution of Chinese painting in the 20th century-from early modernization efforts at the turn of the century, through the 1920s and 1930s wave of students studying in France, wartime art production in the West, and the postwar return of Chinese artists to the international stage, concluding with contemporary ink painting. This exhibition also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and reflects on the development of traditional Chinese painting during this time.
